The World of Eyeliner

After you have completed with your eyeshadow, you will want to add a few finishing touches to make your eyes truly pop! If you are experienced using eyeliner and is just looking for new styles to use, then welcome. However, if you are new to makeup or using eyeliners, it may be difficult to figure out which one is right for you and how to use it. If this is the case, then you are in the right place.

First let me start off by saying that there isn’t just one type of eyeliner for each person. While everyone may have a preference on how a particular type looks on them, all eyeliners work for everyone. There are several different types of eyeliner, but I will just list a few.

Duo Eyeliner

This is a dual-ended, black-and-white eyeliner pencil. While it is not a new concept, it is currently a popular product among all ages.  The White end can enhance your eyes and make them seem larger than normal.

 • Apply the white shade to your waterline or the inner corners of your lower lid.

 • Use the black shade for everyday definition. It can also be used on the upper lid waterline.

 • Create bold, graphic looks by pairing the shades together for striking contrast.

Felt tip eyeliner

This is a long-lasting, versatile liquid eyeliner that glides on smoothly and easily to create countless looks. The  felt tip is flexible to prevent tugging or pulling. It is also removable and can be turned around so the tip stays wet and to prevent fraying. Felt tip eyeliners are very popular due to its ability to create precise, fine lines as well as thick, bold streaks and because it can last up to 16 hours with no fading or flaking. Just be sure your eyes are dry when applying as it could cause smudging. If you can use a marker, you can use this.

  • For an everyday look, start at the inner corner of your eyelid and line eyes to the outer corner, staying as close to the lash line as possible
  •   For thicker lines, apply more pressure
  •  Do not use inside the lash line

Kajal Eyeliner

This product is a dryer type of eyeliner but glides on quite easily. Kajal was used in the Middle East since 3100 BC and was believed to protect one’s eyes from the sun. It’s also great for creating a smudged or smokey look.

  • Creates a softer look
  • Can be applied on your waterline

Eye Pencil

A classic choice for eye makeup. This product has been used for thousands of years and was introduced to the western society in the 1920s. Even if you do not know how to use eyeliner or is an expert in eye makeup, this is the perfect product for you. Eye pencils work similar to actual pencils and need to be sharpened often.

  • It is easy to apply so it is perfect for beginners.
  • Apply under your waterline
  • Automatic eyeliners are also a perfect alternative to this product if you want to save time sharpening the pencil.

Inkwell Eyeliner

This product is a little bit more advanced to use. Imagine drawing with a calligraphy pen, but instead of paper you use your eyes. The tip is usually a felt or sponge  like material and is pointed at the end. Once you get the hang of it, you will love it. This is definitely my go-to liner.

  • It is a liquid so it can get a little messy and easier to make errors
  • The Inkwell eyeliner creates beautiful designs and looks amazing, but needs patience

Liquid Eyeliner

This product works similar to the inkwell eyeliner.  One of the ways it is similar is it’s tip needs to dip into the container that contains the color. While not as wet as the Inkwell eyeliner, it is still a little messy.

  • Ease of use is somewhere between the Eye pencil and the Inkwell.
  • Easier to control and can create more precise lines
  • TIP: Until you get the hang of it, create the line with the eye pencil and trace with the liquid liner.

While they all have their unique style and design to them, all eyeliners are great. After you are comfortable with using an eyeliner of your choice, all that’s left to do is find your signature eye look and have fun!
