Aging well goes beyond consistency with a skincare routine. It’s a lifestyle. It’s a commitment to yourself to be your best in all parts of your life. Aging is a holistic process. Sleep, exercise, and especially your diet play a major role in how you age. Let’s take a look at ways to nourish your skin with healthy foods. What you eat affects how you feel now and how you look tomorrow.
But First, Hydrate
Before we get into the specifics of nutrition, let me pause to speak about hydration. This topic is important and will get its own blog post. But in the meantime, remember that hydration is essential for aging well. Besides improving your skin’s appearance and reducing wrinkles, it transports nutrients throughout the body. It keeps your body lubricated and the organs functioning well. So why am I mentioning this here in the food blog? Because it is a great idea to eat foods with a high water content. Examples are watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew melon, cucumbers, oranges, and other juicy fruits. But don’t discount vegetables such as your summer squashes.
But here’s my hydration rule. “If you wouldn’t wash your car with it, don’t consider it water.” Yes, coffee and teas are made mostly of water, but don’t count them into your hydration count of the day.
How to Nourish Your Skin from the Inside Out
That being said, add lots of fruits and vegetables to your diet. They provide hydration as well as vitamins, fiber, and antioxidants. I’m sure you have heard the “eat the rainbow” recommendation. This is a great practice because you will receive a variety of vitamins and health benefits. The more the better. Besides, variety is the spice of life, right?
In your diet, you will also want to include lean proteins. In addition to chicken, beef, and pork, consider adding lamb, fish, beans, lentils for protein, too. My favorite is salmon. Not only is it protein, but it’s high in fatty Omega-3 acids. This is great for total body inflammation. An inflamed skin can show up as acne breakouts.
Whole grain foods complete a balanced diet. You may swap out white bread for wheat bread and white rice for brown rice. Popcorn is one of my favorite snacks. Ditch the butter. Instead, sprinkle on cinnamon (it’s great for brain and heart health). It may take some getting use to, but whole grain pasta is a healthier alternative. Remember to add oatmeal to your diet from time to time.
What about fats? Yup, healthy fats are great for you. Avocados, nuts (especially walnuts), seeds, and olive oil are great for you. And to my delight, so is dark chocolate. But limit processed sugar and foods as much as possible. Minimize salt, sugary drinks, and processed foods as much as possible. It’s so much better to eat natural foods. Foods in its natural state. Not processed.
