What to Do When Life Feels Emotionally Heavy

Have you ever had something happen that seemed small… but somehow emotionally unraveled you? That happened to me recently. And believe it or not, an adorable stray cat completely challenged my emotional well-being.

Over the past few years, I’ve had generations of backyard cats wander through my life. But one little cat, born about 18 months ago, completely stole my heart. We bonded in a way I never expected. (And trust me… I’ve never considered myself a cat person.)

When he became sick, what started as a simple plan to take him to the vet quickly turned into something much more emotional. I made the difficult decision to take him to an animal shelter so he could receive immediate medical care.

Then I learned something heartbreaking: if he wasn’t adopted quickly, his future could be uncertain. Suddenly, what felt like a small situation emotionally unraveled me. I found myself making calls, reaching out to connections, and desperately trying to find someone who could help.

When Life Feels Emotionally Heavy

I needed an emotional reset. Sometimes life feels emotionally heavy. Sometimes it’s grief, stress, overwhelm, caregiving, disappointment, or simply too much happening all at once. And while I’m not a mental health professional, I do want to share a few gentle emotional wellness habits that helped me feel more grounded.

Here are a few emotional wellness habits for women over 40; simple self-care ideas that can help you feel more grounded when life feels emotionally heavy.

1. Normalize Your Feelings

You don’t have to “fix” your emotions. Lean into them. Let the tears fall. Feel the pain. Acknowledge that it hurts. This is not weakness, it’s normal. It’s life. Repressing emotions can make them feel stronger and louder later.

You don’t have to fix your emotions. Sometimes you simply need to feel them.

2. Get Outside and Move Your Body

Fresh air and sunshine are ever so important. There’s something special about nature that helps reset us emotionally. Take a walk outdoors. If you only able to manage 10 minutes, that matters. Sometimes emotional wellness is found in the little ways we care for our bodies.

Sometimes the best thing we can do is step outside and let nature gently reset us.

3. Slow Down and Breathe

Try this simple emotional reset:

  • Breathe in slowly
  • Pause
  • Exhale slowly
  • Repeat a few times

Sometimes peace comes one breath at a time.

4. Try a Little Laugh Therapy

If you’re coping with stress or simply having hard days, laughter can make all the difference. It’s not being in denial. It’s a way to gently shift the mood when life is emotionally heavy. Give yourself permission to engage in:

  • favorite sitcom
  • comedy movie
  • funny videos
  • laughing with a friend

Sometimes laughter will shift your mood.

5. Create a Simple Self-Care Ritual

There is something powerful about using aromatherapy as part of an emotional reset. It allows your body, mind, and spirit to relax and restore the inner you.

A few things I personally enjoy when I need emotional comfort and restoration are a few JAFRA Spa products I personally enjoy.

  • Ginger & Sea Salt Body Rub – relaxation begins the moment you lift the lid. Apply a little to your wrist and breathe in the scent as needed
  • Scalp Massage & Hair Treatment – the aroma is wonderful. Apply a bit behind the ears and nape of neck.
  • Mud Mask – it’s the amazing aroma you’d find at an upscale day spa.

Sometimes, all you need is a little aromatherapy.

6. Don’t Go Through Hard Things Alone

We were not created to live life in isolation. Reach out to a trusted friend who listens, a trusted clergy member your doctor, a counselor, or a mental health professional. I think withdrawing is a natural response. The best thing you can do for yourself is to reach out.

Sometimes, you need to remember that you are not alone.

Need a Gentle Emotional Reset?

If you’re walking through a hard season and simply need a little extra encouragement, I created an Emotional Reset page just for moments like this.

You’ll find:

  • emotional wellness tips
  • simple self-care ideas
  • encouragement
  • calming practices

Whatever you’re carrying right now, I hope you remember this: you are not alone.

And if life feels especially heavy right now, please remember: you don’t have to carry it alone. Reaching out for support is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Life gets heavy sometimes.

And while healing doesn’t happen overnight, peace often comes one small moment at a time — one walk, one breath, one phone call, one act of self-care at a time. 💜
