A frustration that many women have is staying consistent with a nighttime skincare routine. A rule of thumb I share is to begin directly after the dinner cleanup. Sitting”for just a few minutes” can completely derail your routine. Let’s be honest here, after 40, we don’t usually have the same energy and stamina we did a couple of decades before. Once we sit and get comfortable, we start to decompress the day (yay, we want that).
However, if you can wait just a few minutes longer, you can begin to wind down with a spa, selfcare nighttime skincare routine that will help you to relax even more. Your evening routine lets you remove makeup, sunscreen, and environmental aggressors of the day. Without this step, you are putting your skin at risk for premature aging, clogged pores, potential breakouts, and skin irritation. Your nighttime routine doesn’t take a lot of time. Let’s take it step by step.
How to Do a Nighttime Skincare Routine
Double Cleansing (Don’t Skip This Step)
Double Cleansing is an often overlooked, but it’s an important step in a nighttime skincare routine. The first cleanse removes the surface buildups – suncare, makeup, stressors of the day.
I like to use a cleansing balm. It gently and effectively melts everything away. Your second cleanse goes deeper into the pores now that the barriers are gone. Any residual products will now be washed away leaving your skin squeaky-clean. Because of oiliness, I prefer a foam cleaner – like BioLab Hydrating Facial Cleanser. If your skin leans toward dryness, a cream cleanser is a great option.
Treatment (Where the Magic Happens)
Treatment is when we give our skin a boost with targeted support. If you are completed exhausted, this can be skipped. But only if you absolutely can’t spare an extra minute.
Serums are where the magic happens. They address concerns like dryness, dullness, spots, fine lines, and more. An eye treatment can keep puffiness, dark circles, and crow’s feet (fine lines around the eyes) at bay. I also like to treat my neck and chest. This area can show signs of aging just as quickly as our face.
Hydrate or Moisturize
Hydration is essential, especially for women over 40. Using a moisturizer or hydrator helps keep your skin hydrated overnight, supports your skin barrier, and minimizes moisture loss while you sleep.
This step plays a key role in softening the look of fine lines and keeping your skin looking smooth and radiant. Some call this anti-aging. I like to call it aging well.
Lock It In (Optional but Powerful)
To take your routine one step further, you can seal everything in with an antioxidant face oil. This helps lock in moisture, boost hydration, and leave your skin looking soft and glowy.
We’re women 40 and over. We deserve hydrated, supported, and glowy skin. Isn’t that the goal?
You’re Not in This Alone
