Who says exercise has to happen in a gym? Not me! 🍁
Autumn brings so many opportunities to get moving while enjoying the season. And whether you’re in your 40s, 50s, 60s, or beyond, staying active doesn’t have to mean complicated workouts or expensive equipment.
I’ve always believed that the best exercise is the kind you enjoy enough to keep doing. So, let’s put a little autumn fun into our fitness routines!
5 Fun Ways to Stay Active This Autumn
1. Get Lost in a Corn Maze—On Purpose! 🌽
When was the last time you wandered through a corn maze? Honestly, I never have. But it seems to be a wonderful way to enjoy a little adventure while getting those steps in! Invite a friend or gather the family and see who can find their way out first. You’ll be walking, laughing, and making memories. Just remember to wear comfortable shoes and watch for uneven ground.
2. Put Those Pumpkins to Work! 🎃
Pumpkins aren’t just for decorating! A small, lightweight pumpkin can add a little fun to gentle movement. Try placing a mini pumpkin on one side of a waist-high table and moving it to the other side. Keep it close to your body, avoid twisting your back, and repeat a few times. No giant pumpkins, please! We’re building healthy habits, not auditioning for a strongwoman competition. 😂 An empty plastic pumpkin works beautifully, too.
3. Take the Scenic Route 🍂
Instead of your usual walk, find a neighborhood with beautiful autumn decorations, visit a local park, or explore a walking trail. Here in Southern California, we may not always have crisp autumn weather or spectacular changing leaves, but we can still enjoy the season! Walking supports cardiovascular health, and a change of scenery can make the experience even more enjoyable.
4. Stretch Into Sweater Weather
Take a few minutes to enjoy gentle stretches on your patio, in your backyard, or beside an open window. Try shoulder rolls, comfortable side stretches, and gentle calf stretches. These simple movements can help maintain flexibility and mobility. Move slowly, stay within a comfortable range, and remember that consistency matters more than intensity.
5. Dance to Your Autumn Playlist! 🎶
Turn on your favorite music and move! Dance while decorating your home, preparing dinner, or tidying up. Two or three favorite songs can turn an ordinary afternoon into a joyful movement break. And yes, dancing in your kitchen absolutely counts!
Make Movement Part of Your Autumn Memories
Here’s what I want you to remember: aging well isn’t about doing the most. It’s about finding enjoyable ways to care for yourself consistently.
