One skincare concern I get asked about often is dark circles and puffiness. Technically, those are two separate issues, but they’re commonly asked about as a pair. If that’s something you’re tackling, let’s dive into this together. First, we’ll look at possible causes, then we’ll look at solutions. But I must first remind you that my guidance comes to you from a skincare educator, not a medical professional β so please treat this as education, not medical advice. With that said, let’s begin.
Causes of Dark Circles and Puffiness
Rarely in life does an effect have just one cause. We’re each uniquely designed, so the root causes of our concerns vary. Here are some possibilities.
Dark Circles
- Lack of sleep β yes, beauty sleep is a real thing
- Dehydration β a great reason to drink plenty of water
- Aging β loss of collagen thins the skin under the eyes
- Genetics β ancestors leave many “gifts”
- Seasonal allergies β that package includes more than sneezing
- Stress β though the dark circles here are usually really caused by lack of sleep
Puffiness
- Genetics β more things to thank our ancestors for
- Lack of sleep β seven or more hours are essential
- Sodium β too much retains water in various places
- Crying β tears trigger fluid buildup in the delicate skin around the eyes
- Allergies β the histamine response can cause swelling, not just sneezing
- Aging β skin around the eyes loses elasticity and holds fluid more easily
- Dehydration β ironically, the body retains water when it doesn’t get enough
Did you notice a pattern in the two lists? When you address the root cause of one, you often get the bonus of correcting the other.
Correcting Dark Circles and Puffiness
Natural
For some of these causes, a change of habits can make a huge difference.
- Get more sleep. If this is a struggle for you, you may want to check out my Sleep Well Naturally course.
- Drink more water. Aim for a minimum of 64 oz.
- Manage stress. For helpful tips, refer to my Feel Beautiful, Be Calm blog.
- Address allergies with natural remedies, over-the-counter options, or a prescription β whichever fits your situation.
- Have a conversation with your doctor if symptoms persist or you’re unsure of the cause.
Products
My brand of choice for Purple Essence by Evelyn is JAFRA β a company with a 70-year legacy of advanced skincare. These are the products that help with dark circles and puffiness. Each is suitable for all skin types.
- Revitalize Eye Cream β Visibly improves skin texture and firmness while boosting hydration for a more radiant, revitalized skin around the eyes. Reduces the look of dark circles and puffiness, enhancing overall skin density with continued use. Results are based on a clinical test after 8 weeks of use.
- BioLab Depuff Eye Serum, 3% Caffeine Complex + EGCG Derivative β This specialized serum improves the look of puffy eye. It’s made with concentrated levels of two key ingredients that help minimize the appearance of puffiness, decrease the look of dark circles, and visibly diminish signs of fatigue.
- ROYAL Defy Lift Express Eye Treatment β Diminishes the appearance of dark circles while simultaneously hydrating and soothing. It’s a fast-acting, cooling eye treatment formulated with patented peptides that smooth the look of fine lines and wrinkles.
- Gold Dynamics Lifting Eye Cream β Effectively diminishes the appearance of puffiness, fine lines, wrinkles, and dark circles around the eye area for a hydrated, lifted, less tired look.
- ROYAL Defy 4D Defining Hydrator β And because let’s face it, puffiness affects more than our eyes: this caffeine-enriched, luxurious crΓ¨me-gel quenches thirsty skin and supports your moisture barrier for a 4D age-defying effect. It leaves skin visibly smoother, plumper, and more youthful-looking. Targets fine lines and wrinkles, loss of firmness, dryness, and dark circles and puffiness.
Tools
Here are a few tips that can help.
- A caffeinated tea bag can do wonders. During your DIY spa facial, apply a cool, steeped tea bag over each eye, then sit back or lie down and relax. A spa facial will also help minimize stress β another cause of dark circles and puffiness.
- If you’re a coffee drinker with no tea bags around, go classic: place a sliced cucumber over each eye.
- Chill a spoon and use it to apply your eye treatment or serum.
- Use the JAFRA Cooling Wand β I love that it doubles as a spatula. Never put your fingers directly into your products, as it slowly contaminates them. The cooling wand is a beauty tool designed for the delicate eye area, delivering a refreshing, cooling sensation that helps reduce puffiness and leaves your eye area looking refreshed.
- The JAFRA Defy Eye Massager is the perfect way to relax and de-stress your eyes. Apply gentle pressure to relieve tension, reduce puffiness, improve circulation, and promote better sleep. This product also doubles as a spatula.
- And for the face, the JAFRA DEFY Serum Massage Roller is a rejuvenating beauty tool that combines the benefits of a gentle massage with a serum, promoting better absorption and leaving your skin feeling refreshed, revitalized, and radiant.
Yes, dark circles and puffiness can be a nuisance, but by changing a few habits and using the right products and tools, you can be pleased with the results.
