How to Rethink Expensive Skincare and Shop Smarter

We talk a lot about skincare routines, aging well, and investing in products that truly support healthy skin. But there’s one word that quietly stops many women before they even try something new:

Expensive.

I recently bought a sweater from one of my favorite boutiques. The original price was $69.50. I paid $27.29. And it reminded me of something I hear often about premium skincare:

“It’s too expensive.”

But is it?

Or are we sometimes reacting to the ticket price instead of the true value?

Let’s talk about that.

Price and Value Are Not the Same Thing

The number on the tag is only one part of the story.

Value asks better questions:

  • How long will this last?
  • How much do I need to use?
  • Will it actually give me the results I want?
  • Is it safe and thoughtfully formulated?

When you shift from price-thinking to value-thinking, everything changes.

And that’s how I teach women to shop for skincare.

The Cost-Per-Use Secret Most People Miss

Let’s use something simple — a facial cleanser.

You might find one for $15 and another for $30. At first glance, the $15 option feels smarter.

But here’s what often happens:

  • You use more each time.
  • It runs out in 4 weeks.
  • It doesn’t quite improve your skin.
  • So you buy something else to “fix” it.

Now you’ve purchased two or three products trying to get results.

Meanwhile, a high-quality cleanser might last three months or more because you only need a small amount — and it consistently supports your skin barrier.

When you divide the cost by how long it lasts, the numbers tell a very different story.

That’s called cost-per-use.

And it matters.

Quality Impacts Results — and Your Wallet

When skincare is thoughtfully formulated, you use less. Your skin responds better. You don’t have to “product hop.”

When it’s filled with unnecessary fillers or harsh ingredients, you may not see the improvement you hoped for.

And when results don’t happen, frustration sets in. That’s when women start layering on more products or switching brands every few months.

That cycle is what truly becomes expensive.

I love recommending skincare that delivers on its promises. When products are consistent and effective, you build confidence in your routine — and you stop wasting money.

A Smarter Way to Shop for Premium Skincare

Sometimes something looks expensive until you slow down and do the math.

Divide it by:

  • Months of use
  • Amount needed per application
  • Quality of ingredients
  • Visible results

Now compare that to replacing lower-performing products more frequently.

The smarter question becomes:
“Which one actually supports my skin long term?”

And if you shop strategically — using promotions and loyalty savings — the investment becomes even more reasonable.

The Gentle Reframe

Instead of asking, “Is this expensive?”
Try asking, “Is this valuable for my skin?”

Your skin is not temporary. It’s with you for life.

Choosing products that protect it, nourish it, and support healthy aging isn’t indulgent. It’s wise.

And when you look deeper, sometimes the option that seems higher at first glance is actually the better investment.
