Basics of Foundations

I wear foundation for a few reasons:

  • it’s a barrier against environmental stressors
  • it contains sunscreen, important for anti-aging
  • it creates an even skin tone
  • it produces a dewy, radiant complexion
  • it feels like I am wearing nothing
  • it feels great, even in hot, humid weather
  • it’s an extension of my skincare routine
  • it’s fun!

Notice that I do NOT wear it to cover-up problem skin. My philosophy is the best foundation is great skincare. If you have skin concerns, need corrective skincare products, or would like a FREE consultation, please contact me.

When selecting a foundation color, try a dab on your cheekbone. The color should blend well and be unnoticeable, disappearing into the skin. The goal is not to change your skin color, but to enhance and give an even tone, no discoloration. You may need to wear a darker shade during the summer than you do the rest of the year. You may even consider changing the formula of foundations, also. Sometimes, to get the perfect shade any time of year, you may need to combine two colors. Be sure to view the foundation under natural light. You don’t want to look orange, yellow, or unnatural. Feel the texture to be sure it is comfortable; not too heavy.

My favorite foundation formula is the Radiance Foundation. It’s the ONLY foundation in the cosmetics industry with a special skincare ingredient, RJx, which provides vitamins and minerals delivered with precision, power, and potency. It truly is extending your skincare into your color line. This foundation is both light-weight and buildable. Buildable allows me to add layers to go from a sheer to heavier a coverage.

My second favorite formula is the Long Wear Makeup Broad Spectrum SPF 20. The colors and consistency are very similar to Radiance Foundation but without the added Royal Jelly ingredient.

The Radiance Foundation Stick can be combined with another foundation or can be used alone. Its cream to velvet matte finish shields with an anti-pollution agent and creates a medium-to-full coverage that is both buildable and blendable.

Do you have oily skin? You’ll love how the Matte Foundation controls oil, minimizes pores, and controls shine. The added Vitamin E hydrates and defends against damage.

If you prefer a creamier foundation with a silky matte finish of a powder, then the Cream to Powder Makeup is for you.

You can use your fingers to apply foundation but I find it best to use a makeup tool such as the foundation brush from a Professional Brush Set or a Blender Sponge. Just be sure to properly clean them. For tips on the best care for your brushes, read my Tool Time blog. Clean the blender sponge daily with a dab of your facial cleanser.

For maximum results and longevity, use your choice of primer and setting spray. These combined with a makeup powder will keep your makeup fresh all day and evening. Be daring, have fun with color, and continue to protect your skin with a great foundation in your favorite formula.
