The 5-Minute Self-Care Guide for Busy Women

Small ways to care for yourself when you don’t have time.

You take care of a lot of people and a lot of things. Some days begin before the sun comes up and don’t really stop until you fall into bed at night. Work, children, appointments, activities, meals, laundry, errands—and tomorrow you get up and do it all over again.

When life looks like that, self-care can sound wonderful but completely unrealistic.

So I’m not asking you to find an hour. Let’s start with five minutes.

You don’t need to do everything in this guide. Choose one five-minute practice that fits into the life you’re already living. When that begins to feel natural, you can choose another.

MORNING

Start With Yourself for Five Minutes

Before the demands of the day take over, give yourself a few minutes of care. You might sit quietly with your coffee or tea, pray, stretch, drink a glass of water, step outside for fresh air, or simply take a few slow breaths before everyone needs you.

And if mornings are already too hectic? Skip this one. Self-care shouldn’t make you late for school drop-off!

DURING THE DAY

Take a Five-Minute Pause

Look for a small pocket of time that already exists. It might be after school drop-off, before your next meeting, during lunch, while you’re waiting in the pickup line, or while your child is at practice.

For five minutes, give yourself permission not to accomplish anything. Put down your phone. Step outside. Walk. Listen to a favorite song. Close your eyes. Breathe. Pray. Or simply sit quietly.

You don’t have to fill every available minute.

EVENING

Turn What You Already Do Into Self-Care

You don’t necessarily need another nighttime routine. Instead, choose something you’re already doing and slow it down for five minutes.

Your shower can become a moment to breathe instead of rushing through it. Your skincare routine can become a reminder that caring for your skin is also a way of caring for yourself. Stretch, put your phone down a few minutes earlier, pray, read a couple of pages, or simply enjoy the quiet.

Five peaceful minutes can be a gentle way of telling yourself, “I’m finished for today.”

Pause + Notice

Take a Five-Minute Body Check

When you’re busy caring for everyone else, it’s surprisingly easy to stop noticing what you need. Take five minutes and ask yourself:

  • Have I had enough water today?
  • Have I eaten something nourishing?
  • Do I need to stand, stretch, or move?
  • Am I tired?
  • Am I holding tension somewhere in my body?
  • Do I need a few minutes of quiet?
  • Is there something I need help with?

You don’t have to fix everything you notice. Notice first. Then choose one small thing you can do for yourself.

For the extra-full days

When You Truly Don’t Have Five Minutes

Some days, even five minutes may feel impossible. That’s okay. Take one minute.

Drink the water. Take the deep breath. Step outside. Apply your sunscreen. Say the prayer. Send the text asking for help. Put your phone down. Close your eyes.

Self-care isn’t measured by how long it takes.

7 DAYS • 5 MINUTES • ONE SMALL STEP

Your 7-Day, 5-Minute Self-Care Promise

For the next seven days, I’m going to give myself five minutes each day.

My five-minute self-care practice will be:
The best time for me to do it is:
I can attach it to something I already do:

And if I miss a day?

I’ll simply begin again tomorrow.

One small step is enough

You belong on your care list, too.

You don’t need a perfect morning routine, an open afternoon, or an elaborate self-care plan. You need permission to include yourself among the people you take care of.

Five minutes won’t make your schedule less busy. But those five minutes can remind you that you matter in the middle of that busy life, too.

Start there.

Keep taking the small steps that help you age well with confidence.
